Opening a project
Open the project menu in the top bar. Type the path of a .knxproj file or use Browse…, then Open. Without an
ETS file you can start from scratch.
Only ETS 6 projects are supported. A file with another layout, such as one from an older ETS, fails with the error “unsupported project layout (only ETS 6 .knxproj files are supported)”.
Passwords
If the project is password-protected, Tinkerbus asks for the password and shows Unlock. A wrong password asks again.
- The typed password is used for that one call and is not kept.
- If you tick Remember on this computer, Tinkerbus stores a key derived from the password, not the password itself,
for this one project file in
settings.jsonin your configuration folder (see Settings). The file is readable only by you. The key opens that project file and nothing else. - Forget it in the project menu removes the stored key.
With the command line tools, give the password as a file (-pwfile) or in the environment variable
KNXPROJ_PASSWORD for knxproj, so that it never shows up in a command line. See knxproj.
After opening
The project menu shows the project name, the number of devices, group addresses and areas, and, once you edit, an unsaved changes marker with Show changes. Save writes your edits into the file after copying its previous version to a backup folder; Save as… writes another file and continues on it. See Saving.
Start from scratch
Start from scratch… in the project menu makes a new, empty project:
- Enter a project name.
- Choose how group addresses are written: three levels (
1/2/3) or two levels (1/20). - Check the file name (it is suggested from the name, in the folder of the last project or your home folder; Browse… chooses another) and click Create. An existing file is never replaced.
The file is written and opened. It has Area 1 with Line 1 (twisted pair), no devices, no group addresses and no password. The main and middle groups of the group address list are created when you add addresses. If the KNX master data is not on the computer yet, the form offers to download it first, so that the new project knows data types; see Catalog.
Opening a project made this way in ETS 6 has not been tried. A password cannot be set for a new project yet.
