Saving and changes

Undo, the list of changes, Save and Save as, the backups of earlier versions, and the project signature.

Undo, redo and the list of changes

Every edit can be undone. Undo and Redo are in the top bar (Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z outside text fields). While there are unsaved edits, the project menu shows Unsaved changes and Show changes, a list grouped by section of everything that differs from the file as it was last saved. Closing a project with unsaved changes asks for confirmation. Undo and redo keep working after a save.

Save

Save in the top bar (Ctrl+S) and in the project menu writes the edits into the file the project was opened from. It is disabled while there is nothing to save.

Before the file is replaced, Tinkerbus copies the previous version to the folder tinkerbus/backups/projects/ in your configuration folder (see Settings). The copy is named after the project and the time, and the last five copies of each project are kept. If the copy cannot be made, nothing is replaced and you get an error.

The message after a save names the file and the backup. Five backups are not an archive: keep your own copy of important projects, particularly because ETS 6 has not been checked with files saved this way (see below).

Save as…

Save as… in the project menu writes the project to another file. A name is suggested. If the file exists, you are asked before it is replaced.

Tinkerbus then continues on the new file: later saves go there, it is the project that is reopened at the next start, and the original stays as it was. A password you chose to remember moves to the new file.

The project signature

A project that ETS signed carries a signature of its content. After editing, the signature no longer matches. When you save such a project Tinkerbus adds to its message:

This project carries an ETS signature that no longer matches the content, so ETS 6 may warn when it opens the file.

Tinkerbus cannot create a valid signature. Doing so would need permission from the KNX Association or credentials belonging to Tinkerbus itself, and Tinkerbus does not reuse credentials of ETS. Because Save replaces the file, the backup is then the last version that ETS wrote. Use Save as… first if you want to try an edited project next to the original.

Projects saved by Tinkerbus have not been checked in ETS 6 yet. When you add a device from the catalog, the form says that ETS 6 was not used to check the result and the signature is no longer valid.
